The Women of Redditch United
You already know everything you can possibly know about the men’s team of Redditch United, but did you know that they have a women’s team which is just as impressive? Well, now you do and it’s our pleasure to introduce you to the Red women who play the sport with skill and finesse.
Redditch United is among the oldest English football clubs, having been established all the way back in 1891, but the Redditch United Women’s team is relatively new. The club founded a women’s team only in 2008, but it didn’t take the Reds Ladies long before they started impressing everyone with their spectacular skills.
The team is competing in the West Midlands Regional Women’s Football League (tier 6 of women’s association football). They play games every Sunday with kick-off at 3 pm sharp at the Valley Stadium in Redditch. If you want to attend one of their games, you can find more information on the club’s website.
The Red Ladies are known as fierce players and they are revered by their fans and rivals alike.
They have an impressive track record in their local league and they are currently one of the teams favoured to win the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup after they advanced to the semi-finals only a few days ago. As you can see, the Reds just cannot stop winning the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup, whether that be the men’s or the women’s team.
Perhaps their most impressive feat, however, is their divisional double in the 2017/2018 season. The Red Ladies managed to become league champions (West Midlands South) and lift the league cup the same year which is the type of double that even the men’s team has not been able to reach.
The last game which made them the double winners of the season was against the Coventry Sphinx and it was a landslide win, 2-0. Ellie Gerhold broke the goalless game with a volley on 52 minutes, while Georgie Harris cemented their win with a distance goal in the last 10 minutes of the game.
The Red Ladies were welcomed triumphantly and they received awards for their impressive work. Kerstin Ballard was named Yong Player of the Season, while Sian Cousins received the Supporters’ Player of the Season award and Maisie Farr was named Players’ Player of the Season at the team’s annual awards that year.
Red Ladies’ boss Gary Barrell congratulated his players and thanked the staff and supporters for creating this “special group of people who will continue to progress as a group on and off the pitch”.
This divisional double made headlines which attracted new attention to the Redditch United Women’s team and the club as a whole. This also inspired little girls in the region to take up football in the hopes of becoming one of the Red Ladies one day.
